Iran Claims Shooting Down US Military Drone
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared in a statement carried by a state-run news agency that the unmanned aircraft had penetrated Iranian airspace in what it characterized as a deliberate provocation in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to the IRGC, the drone was tracked and eliminated by advanced domestic air defense missile systems after crossing into the country's territorial waters.
"An aggressive MQ-1 drone belonging to the US military, which entered Iranian airspace over territorial waters with the aim of carrying out a hostile operation, was identified and destroyed by the IRGC's modern air defense missiles at dawn today," it said.
The IRGC used the incident to issue a pointed warning, stating that Iran would respond decisively to any act of aggression against its sovereignty.
The US military had not issued an official response to the claim at the time of reporting. The MQ-1 Predator is an armed reconnaissance drone long operated by US forces across multiple theaters of operation.
